Proposed 2024 Canadian Government Donation Extension

In an effort to mitigate the impact of the recent Canada Post mail stoppage, the Government of Canada has announced that it intends to extend the charitable donation deadline for the 2024 tax year, so that donors have sufficient time to make their contribution to Canadian charities.

The announcement comes because of the four-week Canada Post mail stoppage that would have seen many donations held up by mail delivery delays. The effort is intended to ensure that charitable contributions made in 2024 are received and processed during the largest giving period for many Canadian charities, including Mercy Ships Canada.

What does this mean if the changes come into effect? The donations you made in 2024 can be claimed on your 2024 income tax return per usual. However, it allows that any donations made from January 1, 2025, to February 28, 2025, can also be claimed on your 2024 income tax return or held until you file your 2025 taxes. This allows donors to make a choice that best benefits them when it comes to filing their 2024 and 2025 tax returns.

As a result, official donation receipts from Mercy Ships Canada will be issued for any one-time gifts made between January 1, 2025, and February 28, 2025.
