\n\t\n\tCONAKRY, GUIN\u00c9E, le 26<\/sup> septembre 2024 : <\/strong> L'unique \u00e9cole dentaire publique de Guin\u00e9e a c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 hier l\u2019extension de son centre de formation ultramoderne, qui doublera la capacit\u00e9 d'apprentissage, de pratique et de traitement des patients des \u00e9tudiants en m\u00e9decine dentaire. Il comblera \u00e9galement le foss\u00e9 critique existant en mati\u00e8re d'acc\u00e8s aux soins dentaires.<\/p>\n La nouvelle extension de plus de 1 500 m\u00e8tres carr\u00e9s de Universit\u00e9 Gamal Abdel Nasser de Conakry<\/a> (UGANC) marque la fin de 20 mois de chantier et s'appuie sur un programme d\u00e9j\u00e0 florissant qui ouvre la voie \u00e0 la transformation des soins dentaires dans toute l'Afrique subsaharienne, \u00e0 mesure que de nouveaux partenaires s'associent \u00e0 cette initiative.<\/p>\n Depuis son partenariat avec l'organisation humanitaire internationale Mercy Ships en 2018 pour aider \u00e0 la r\u00e9novation d'un b\u00e2timent existant, l'UGANC a transform\u00e9 son approche de la formation dentaire, en \u00e9tablissant de nouvelles normes pour un enseignement ax\u00e9 sur le patient o\u00f9 les \u00e9tudiants sont form\u00e9s \u00e0 la pratique sur les \u00e9quipements.<\/p>\n Guinea’s Minister of Higher Education, Mr Alpha Bacar Barry, who was the first patient to receive dental treatment at the newly-opened clinic, said:<\/p>\n\t “It’s one thing to have a gift; it’s another thing to make it last. We know that the population in our country is really in need of dental care. This center is appointed to be a response to meet that need, because you cannot talk health if you don’t have infrastructure. Having this infrastructure and equipment is a huge blessing for Guinea.”<\/p>\n \u00ab Je demande \u00e0 tous les \u00e9tudiants, les b\u00e9n\u00e9ficiaires de cette grande r\u00e9ussite aujourd'hui, de travailler dur afin de s\u2019engager \u00e0 devenir de grands dentistes\npour la population qui en a besoin. J'encourage les \u00e9tudiants et les enseignants \u00e0 faire de la recherche pour continuer \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer le syst\u00e8me de sant\u00e9 de la Guin\u00e9e \u00bb.<\/p>\n Il a ajout\u00e9 : \u00ab Merci \u00e0 Mercy Ships pour ses efforts et son engagement et pour la construction de ce centre, qui sera un pilier significatif de la formation et un centre de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour les \u00e9tudiants en m\u00e9decine dentaire de la r\u00e9gion de l'Afrique de l'Ouest et au-del\u00e0. \u00bb<\/p>\n\t Cet agrandissement des structures d\u2019accueil permet au programme de doctorat en chirurgie dentaire d'accueillir 30 \u00e9tudiants par classe, soit une capacit\u00e9 totale de plus de 210 \u00e9tudiants. Ces chiffres repr\u00e9sentent une avanc\u00e9e significative dans la lutte contre la p\u00e9nurie de professionnels de la sant\u00e9 dentaire. Between 2014 and 2019, the WHO Africa region averaged just 3.3 dentists per 100,000 people-a figure that’s about one-tenth of the global ratio.<\/a><\/p>\n Before Mercy Ships’ involvement, there was no simulation or on-site clinic for students. In 2018-19, the partnership introduced simulation and practical training to students with 4 simulation stations and 10 dental chairs for patient care. The expansion created 30 simulation stations along with 22 dental chairs for patient care and created new labs for practical training and dental prosthodontics. Cutting edge technologies include a CBCT (Cone Bean CT) scanning machine that allows for detailed 3D images to be taken quickly for accurate diagnosis and treatment and an electronic medical management system installed for patient recordkeeping.<\/p>\n Le professeur Mohamed Ciss\u00e9, Doyen de la facult\u00e9 de m\u00e9decine de l'UGANC, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 :<\/p>\n\t “Guineans are used to going abroad for medical treatment, but with this gem there will be no need to seek treatment abroad. I would simply like to thank Mercy Ships, because they have enabled us to get out of a rut and to become a leading light in terms of dental surgery.”<\/p>\n\t Lead dentist Dr. David Ugai – now the Mercy Ships Country Director in Guinea and the Dental Director of Education and Investment – witnessed the overwhelming scope of the dental need in the nation when he first volunteered with Mercy Ships in Guinea in 2012.
