\r\n\t\r\n\tDuring the Congress, our four collaborators gave a 90-minute presentation on the theme of “Being a nurse on board a hospital ship”.<\/p>\r\n\t
In October 2022, Mercy Ships Canada had the privilege of participating in the 8th World Conference of SIDIIEF (Secr\u00e9tariat international des infirmiers et infirmi\u00e8res de l’espace francophone).<\/p>\r\n
Le SIDIIEF est une organisation sans but lucratif, qui a pour mission de constituer, de mobiliser et d\u2019animer un r\u00e9seau mondial infirmier francophone de haut niveau qui r\u00e9fl\u00e9chit collectivement aux grands enjeux de sant\u00e9. Instance de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence internationale, le SIDIIEF facilite, au sein de la communaut\u00e9 infirmi\u00e8re francophone, le partage des exp\u00e9riences et des savoirs infirmiers afin de contribuer au d\u00e9veloppement de la sant\u00e9 et \u00e0 l\u2019am\u00e9lioration des soins offerts aux populations, et de permettre \u00e0 la profession d\u2019atteindre le plein potentiel de son champ d\u2019exercice.<\/p>\r\n
Lors de ce congr\u00e8s, nous avons pu repr\u00e9senter la communaut\u00e9 infirmi\u00e8re francophone de Mercy Ships en invitant 4 infirmi\u00e8res b\u00e9n\u00e9voles ayant d\u00e9j\u00e0 servi \u00e0 bord de nos navires-h\u00f4pitaux. C\u00e9line L\u00e9ger (Qu\u00e9bec, Canada), Sangavi Shanmuganathan et Christine Oppliger (Suisse) et Karine Gabali (France), se sont jointes \u00e0 notre \u00e9quipe pour venir \u00e0 la rencontre de la communaut\u00e9 infirmi\u00e8re afin de partager la passion de leur profession ainsi que celle de leur implication aupr\u00e8s des patients de Mercy Ships.<\/p>\r\n
At the Congress, our four collaborators gave a 90-minute presentation on “Being a nurse on a hospital ship”. This session provided an opportunity to present what our volunteer nurses live for but also to interact with the audience and hear their pertinent questions and interest in the NGO’s nursing practices.<\/p>\r\n
For Sangavi, a nurse and Master’s student in Health Science, who is focusing her research on humanitarian health organizations, her involvement as a volunteer on board the Africa Mercy allowed her to go further in her understanding. Sharing her experience as both a volunteer and a researcher was rewarding. She noticed that,<\/p>\r\n\t
“Many nurses aspire to have a humanitarian experience in their lives and feel drawn to Mercy Ships.”<\/p>\r\n\t

“This sharing has brought me out of my shell and allowed me to communicate my passion for humanitarian work.”<\/p>\r\n\t
Tout juste de retour de son service \u00e0 bord, Christine appr\u00e9cie sa participation \u00e0 titre de repr\u00e9sentante de Mercy Ships.<\/p>\r\n\t
“Sharing with Mercy Ships volunteers as well as with people who had never heard of the organization allowed me to reflect on the experience. To be able to share more about a special experience that I enjoyed immensely was a real pleasure.”<\/p>\r\n\t
La doyenne de nos b\u00e9n\u00e9voles, C\u00e9line L\u00e9ger qui a servi \u00e0 bord \u00e0 trois reprises parle ainsi de son exp\u00e9rience :<\/p>\r\n\t
“First of all, it is always a privilege to represent a cause that makes people happy, to pique their curiosity about the model presented and to make them see the possibility of doing the same. Sharing in large numbers or individually has had as much impact on me in my opinion as it has on others. In the sense that I received as much as others could receive by witnessing their positive responses.”<\/p>\r\n

C\u2019est dans un d\u00e9sir de mettre nos efforts en commun pour la formation des professionnels de la sant\u00e9 que Mercy Ships Canada a voulu construire des ponts avec le SIDIIEF, sachant que l\u2019impact d\u2019une formation ad\u00e9quate et un investissement dans le savoir-faire m\u00e9dical est porteur pour r\u00e9duire les in\u00e9galit\u00e9s en mati\u00e8re de sant\u00e9 pour les pays en d\u00e9veloppement.<\/p>\r\n
That is why Mercy Ships facilitated a 3.5 hour educational event on “Perioperative Care” for nursing professionals working on the African continent.<\/p>\r\n
La formatrice invit\u00e9e via visioconf\u00e9rence, Dre Odry Agbessi, est m\u00e9decin sp\u00e9cialiste en chirurgie plastique r\u00e9paratrice au B\u00e9nin et une pr\u00e9cieuse collaboratrice avec le programme de renforcement des capacit\u00e9s m\u00e9dicales chez Mercy Ships. La participation \u00e0 cette formation a donn\u00e9 acc\u00e8s \u00e0 une attestation de formation continue valid\u00e9e par l\u2019Institut et Haute \u00c9cole de la Sant\u00e9 La Source de Lausanne, Suisse.<\/p>\r\n
Mercy Ships Canada se r\u00e9jouit de pouvoir collaborer \u00e0 nouveau avec le SIDIIEF dans le futur et contribuer ensemble \u00e0 cr\u00e9er de la sant\u00e9 pour les populations.<\/p>\r\n\t
