The patient’s blood was A+, and she was going to need a lot more of it. Mercy Ships volunteer anesthesiologist Dr. Brian Barki and his team knew this for certain.<\/p>\r\n

Au cours d\u2019une r\u00e9union \u00e0 bord du Global Mercy\u00ae, amarr\u00e9 dans le port de Dakar, au S\u00e9n\u00e9gal, ils commenc\u00e8rent \u00e0 \u00e9laborer un plan d\u2019urgence. Le Dr Barki \u00e9tait accompagn\u00e9 d\u2019un autre anesth\u00e9siste, de trois infirmi\u00e8res et de trois chirurgiens, pour une intervention complexe.<\/p>\r\n

They knew as they removed the woman’s facial tumor, she could lose a significant amount of blood. They planned to give her two units of blood they had at the ready, and then call for more.<\/p>\r\n

But they wouldn’t get it from a fridge. They’d get it from friends, colleagues, and strangers, who would all donate in real time to save this woman’s life.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\"blood-donation-collecte-sang-gallery-1-1024x704\"\r\n

\r\n\t\tDonneurs de sang : une banque de sang flottante\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t

Dans un environnement m\u00e9dical traditionnel, les donneurs de sang sont recrut\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019avance lors de collectes de sang, et leurs dons sont scell\u00e9s dans des poches et stock\u00e9s pour un usage ult\u00e9rieur. Mais le fonctionnement d\u2019un navire-h\u00f4pital de Mercy Ships, coup\u00e9 des ressources habituelles, est diff\u00e9rent : il faut compter sur son personnel.<\/p>\r\n

Les membres b\u00e9n\u00e9voles de l\u2019\u00e9quipage s\u2019inscrivent pour \u00eatre donneurs de sang s\u2019ils le souhaitent et font tester leur sang. Ils peuvent ensuite \u00eatre appel\u00e9s \u00e0 tout moment pour donner leur sang aux patients qui en ont besoin.<\/p>\r\n\t

“It is very strange giving blood one day, then taking care of the patient who received it the next,” said Danita Gilbert, a volunteer nurse from Peterborough, Ontario. “The patient never knew about it. I knew, though, that I was not just caring for this person, but had had a much more direct impact on their outcome.”<\/p>\r\n\t

It’s not just medical staff who have that direct impact. Every single volunteer on board has the opportunity to donate.<\/p>\r\n\t

“Everyone contributes to the moment a patient sees themselves once their bandages are removed,” Danita said.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\"blood-donation-collecte-sang-gallery-2-1024x704\"\r\n

\r\n\t\tUn don qui sauve des vies en temps r\u00e9el\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t

It was Dr. Joe Park’s first week on board the Africa Mercy\u00ae. An anesthesiologist from New York City, he was in a new setting with new coworkers – and he had a patient who needed a liter of blood.<\/p>\r\n\t

“We notified the blood bank that this was the case, and they said, ‘Sure, no problem,'” Dr. Park remembered. Not long after, there was a knock at the door. The lab director arrived with a bag of blood.<\/p>\r\n

“I held it, and it was still warm,” Dr. Park said. “I told her, ‘Thank you so much, where did you get this from?’ And she said, ‘It’s mine.'” Dr. Park thought she was joking.<\/p>\r\n

“Then I looked at her arm, and she still had the bandage from the donation,” he said. “It was incredible.”<\/p>\r\n\t

For Dr. Park, it was just one of the moments he realized that every single person on board has an impact that is “felt in real time.”<\/p>\r\n\t

“Everyone works together in this beautiful way,” he said.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\"blood-donation-collecte-sang-gallery-3-1024x704\"\r\n

\r\n\t\t‘Generosity Kept This Woman Alive’\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t

As Dr. Brian Barki recalls that facial tumor removal on the Global Mercy<\/em>, he remembers witnessing that same teamwork in motion.<\/p>\r\n\t

“From the first incision, our lady began to bleed significantly,” he said. Early on, they used one unit of A+ blood they had prepared. Soon after, they used the second.<\/p>\r\n

“At that point, (our senior lab technologist) had already started calling other people to donate,” Dr. Barki said. “After that, things kind of became a blur. We kept losing more and more blood in surgery.”<\/p>\r\n\t

\u00ab \u00c0 ce moment-l\u00e0, notre technicien de laboratoire principal avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 contacter des personnes \u00e0 bord pour qu\u2019elles donnent leur sang \u00bb, t\u00e9moigne le Dr Barki. \u00ab Apr\u00e8s, les choses se sont un peu compliqu\u00e9es. Nous manquions vraiment de sang en salle d\u2019op\u00e9ration. \u00bb<\/p>\r\n

Le Dr Barki s\u2019est alors entretenu avec un interne en anesth\u00e9siologie.<\/p>\r\n\t

“I was updating him on our situation, and he said, ‘Hey, my blood type is A+,'” Dr. Barki said. “I told him we could really use his blood and that he should go donate. Away he went.” The surgeon in that OR chimed in. He was A+, too. Dr. Barki asked him to go to the lab when he finished his surgery.<\/p>\r\n

“By the end of the day, we lost about 5.5 liters of blood,” Dr. Barki said. “That’s more than all the blood in this woman’s body.”<\/p>\r\n

To replenish it, she received donations from seven different crew members. “Their generosity kept this woman alive,” Dr. Barki said.<\/p>\r\n\t

Les dons de l\u2019\u00e9quipe ont un impact consid\u00e9rable sur des patientes comme elle. Mais ils ont \u00e9galement un impact sur les b\u00e9n\u00e9voles comme les Dr Barki et Park.<\/p>\r\n\t
