Le Minist\u00e8re de la Sant\u00e9 Publique, en partenariat avec Mercy Ships, a annonc\u00e9 le retour du navire-h\u00f4pital\u202fAfrica Mercy\u00ae<\/em> \u00e0 Toamasina, en mettant l'accent sur le d\u00e9veloppement du capital humain. Ce retour marque une \u00e9tape importante dans l'am\u00e9lioration de l'acc\u00e8s \u00e0 des soins chirurgicaux de qualit\u00e9 pour la population Malgache.<\/p>\r\n

Au cours des dix prochains mois, plus de 1 375 interventions chirurgicales gratuites seront r\u00e9alis\u00e9es, ainsi qu'environ 1 480 proc\u00e9dures dentaires, au b\u00e9n\u00e9fice des patients les plus vuln\u00e9rables. Parall\u00e8lement, un programme de formation continue renforcera les comp\u00e9tences des professionnels de la sant\u00e9 malgaches, contribuant ainsi \u00e0 l'am\u00e9lioration \u00e0 long terme des soins chirurgicaux et anesth\u00e9siques dans le pays.<\/p>\r\n\t

Montreal-based Dr. Sherif Emil, Mercy Ships International’s new Chief Medical Officer, shared his thoughts on the mission, saying, “Mercy Ships is glad to return to Madagascar to continue to nurture its long-standing relationship with the Malagasy people, and to provide surgical care where it is needed most. We will build on what we accomplished together so far and continue to lay the foundation for a better future of surgical care for the nation.”\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\t

This strategic partnership between the Ministry of Public Health and Mercy Ships reaffirms the Malagasy government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s healthcare capacity, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals and the National Health Policy. The joint efforts of both teams have already enabled the selection of patients across 12 regions in Madagascar, ensuring an efficient and targeted response to the most urgent surgical needs.<\/p>\r\n

The success of this field service has been made possible thanks to the strong support of Malagasy authorities, including the President of the Republic, the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance. This initiative highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in improving healthcare services and strengthening the country’s surgical delivery.<\/p>\r\n

L'\u202fAfrica Mercy<\/em> propose des interventions chirurgicales gratuites et s\u00fbres dans diverses sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9s, notamment la chirurgie maxillo-faciale, la chirurgie ophtalmique, la chirurgie plastique reconstructive, la chirurgie orthop\u00e9dique p\u00e9diatrique et la chirurgie g\u00e9n\u00e9rale.<\/p>\r\n

Beyond surgical care, Mercy Ships is committed to building local capacity by offering training in surgery, anesthesia, nursing, and dental care in collaboration with Malagasy universities. This knowledge transfer is essential to ensuring the progressive empowerment of Madagascar’s healthcare system.<\/p>\r\n\t

Canadian Erin Ugai, Senior Director for Education, Training, and Advocacy, explains: “Mercy Ships is partnering with universities across Madagascar to support clinical training of their students and residents in surgery, anesthesia, nursing and dentistry through placements onboard the Africa Mercy<\/em> and in collaboration with Mercy Ships Guinea. We are looking forward to developing our partnerships to invest more in the surgical and education systems in Madagascar in 2025.”\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\t

Since its first mission to Madagascar in 1996, Mercy Ships has performed more than 7,500 surgeries and provided 57,000 dental treatments. Additionally, over 2,000 healthcare professionals have received specialized training, significantly contributing to the country’s long-term surgical care capacity.<\/p>\r\n
