Lorsqu\u2018adolescent, il s\u2019est rendu pour la premi\u00e8re fois \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4pital pour montrer sa l\u00e9g\u00e8re grosseur au visage, on lui a dit qu\u2019il s\u2019agissait d\u2019un mal de dents qui gu\u00e9rirait. Mais d\u2019ann\u00e9e en ann\u00e9e, la tumeur a grandi et a fini par atteindre la taille d\u2019un pamplemousse. Elle appuyait sur les nerfs de son visage et bloquait en partie sa vue.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>&#8220;He was going through a tough situation as a young man who is supposed to enjoy his life,&#8221; said his father, Toure. In addition to the constant pain, Toure says the tumour took a toll on Papa&#8217;s self-esteem: &#8220;Seeing your childhood friends in good health while you&#8217;re disabled is very embarrassing for a child.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\t<p>Papa&#8217;s family described him as ambitious. This ambition is rooted in a sense of responsibility for his family and community. He&#8217;s always prided himself on being able to help his parents and support his younger siblings. He runs a motorbike repair shop with a friend, where he provides essential services and trains young men who want to learn the trade. &#8220;I opened it and trained some apprentices. I even have colleagues who work elsewhere, I taught them.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>La tumeur grandissante de Papa lui faisait craindre que son \u00e9tat de sant\u00e9 n\u2019ait un impact sur son avenir et ne se r\u00e9percute sur sa famille et ses amis.<\/p>\r\n<p>Il y a quelques ann\u00e9es, l\u2019espoir a jailli pour Papa, car sa famille a r\u00e9uni suffisamment de fonds pour lui permettre de se faire op\u00e9rer dans un h\u00f4pital. Alors que l\u2019op\u00e9ration \u00e9tait sur le point de commencer, une panne d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 s\u2019est produite. Quand les lumi\u00e8res sont revenues, la peur et la m\u00e9fiance ressenties par Papa ont pes\u00e9 lourd. But yearning for healing overcame the fear. &#8220;I was afraid, but I trusted God,&#8221; says Papa.<\/p>\r\n<h2>\r\n\t\tPapa&#8217;s Healing Went Beyond the Physical\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t<p>As the haze of anesthesia gradually lifted after his surgery, Papa didn&#8217;t have to reach for his face to know the tumour was gone.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>&#8220;When I woke up, I didn&#8217;t touch it, but I felt the tumour had gone because before, the tumour blocked my sight.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\t<p>For the first time in years, Papa&#8217;s vision was unobstructed. His surgery involved removing part of his jawbone where the tumour was growing. The volunteer surgeons then reconstructed his jaw using a metal plate.<\/p>\r\n<p>Papa spent weeks recovering in the hospital wards, finding connection with fellow patients and crewmembers through activities like crafts. &#8220;I even made bracelets by myself; I learned it while in hospital&#8230; the nurses taught me how to do it,&#8221; Papa remembered.<\/p>\r\n<p>Paul Kangethe, a volunteer ward nurse from the United States, cared for Papa post-surgery. He observed that as Papa&#8217;s physical healing was underway, the transformation became more than just skin-deep.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>&#8220;The first day after surgery, he was quiet, staying in bed, not interacting, not talking much. But as the days progressed, he was much more interactive and active&#8230; It seemed he was much more comfortable talking and sharing.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/patient-month-papa-gallery-6.jpg\" alt=\"patient-month-papa-gallery-6\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"780\" width=\"1135\" title=\"patient-month-papa-gallery-6\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\r\n\t<p>Papa et une infirmi\u00e8re b\u00e9n\u00e9vole apr\u00e8s l'op\u00e9ration. \u00a9 Mercy Ships<\/p>\r\n\t<p>Papa&#8217;s friend expressed gratitude when he returned home, healthy and hopeful.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>&#8220;What you&#8217;ve done isn&#8217;t just for Papa, but also for the community. We were all worried about him. His facial tumour is gone now, and his health, dignity, and joy are restored. You did this for Papa and the entire city,&#8221; he celebrated.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>Years with the tumour had cast a shadow of uncertainty, making it difficult for Papa to imagine a future when health was a constant concern. He spoke of seemingly simple aspirations that once seemed distant: &#8220;I always wanted to get a driving license and an ID card.
