\r\n\t\tHistoire\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t

Acquis en 1999 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une donation initiale de la Fondation Balcraig, le navire a \u00e9t\u00e9 rebaptis\u00e9 Africa Mercy<\/em> par Dame Norma Major en avril 2000. Le navire est en service depuis 2007.<\/p>\r\nThe \u00a330 million ($62 million USD) refit of the former Danish rail ferry Dronning Ingrid into the\u00a0Africa Mercy<\/em>\u00a0was made possible through a matching grant from the Oak Foundation, ongoing support from the Balcraig Foundation, corporate gifts-in-kind, trusts and individual contributors. The conversion was completed at A & P Shipyard, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in March 2007. The refit was deemed the largest conversion project of its kind in the UK.\r\n

L'h\u00f4pital \u00e0 bord de l'Africa Mercy<\/em><\/h2>\r\n\t

The hospital covers most of the original rail deck – approximately 1,200 square metres. It is divided into quadrants containing supply\/services, five operating rooms, a four bed recovery, intensive care for up to five individuals and 80 ward beds. The volunteer crew provides free surgical procedures on board including cataract removal\/lens implants, tumour removal, cleft lip and palate reconstruction, orthopaedics (club feet and bowed legs) and Women’s Health (including obstetric fistula repair), Plastic, General surgeries as well as some Ambulatory Day Surgery procedures. The hospital contains a CT Scanner, X-ray, and laboratory services which support the surgical service.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\t\tFormation m\u00e9dicale en Afrique\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t

L\u2019Africa Mercy<\/em> sert \u00e9galement de plateforme pour dispenser des formations de qualit\u00e9 aux prestataires de soins de sant\u00e9 locaux, ce qui constitue un moyen durable de renforcer le syst\u00e8me de sant\u00e9 d\u2019un pays. Les interventions de formation permettent de s\u2019assurer que les prestataires de soins de sant\u00e9 utilisent les bonnes pratiques afin de r\u00e9duire le risque de s\u00e9jours hospitaliers prolong\u00e9s, d\u2019accidents et d\u2019infections nosocomiales. Ces formations sont non seulement ax\u00e9es sur les soins chirurgicaux (administration et soins d\u2019anesth\u00e9sie en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9, liste de contr\u00f4le de l\u2019OMS pour une chirurgie s\u00fbre, soins de traumatologie primaire et comp\u00e9tences chirurgicales essentielles), mais aussi sur divers services de soins param\u00e9dicaux (par exemple, Biomed, St\u00e9rilisation), et sur un programme de formation agricole. Lorsque cela s\u2019av\u00e8re appropri\u00e9, Mercy Ships peut soutenir ces efforts de formation par des dons d\u2019\u00e9quipement et\/ou des r\u00e9novations d\u2019installations afin de s\u2019assurer que les stagiaires soient aussi efficaces que possible.<\/p>\r\n

Le navire dispose d'espaces de r\u00e9union et de travail ainsi que de couchettes pour un \u00e9quipage moyen de 400 personnes originaires de nombreux pays qui servent \u00e0 bord \u00e0 tout moment. Chaque ann\u00e9e, plus de 1 100 b\u00e9n\u00e9voles professionnels originaires de plus de 60 pays servent \u00e0 bord. Les 481 couchettes sont r\u00e9parties entre des cabines familiales, des cabines \u00e0 deux couchettes pour les couples et des cabines individuelles ou partag\u00e9es pour les occupants individuels.<\/p>\r\n

S\u00e9curit\u00e9 \u00e0 bord de l'Africa Mercy<\/em><\/h2>\r\n\t

The vessel is fitted with an automatic sprinkler system throughout the accommodation and hospital areas. An addressable smoke detector system pinpoints the exact location of the source of any potential fire. Machinery spaces are covered by CO2 gas flooding system as well as a “Hi Fog” system which can be very effective in controlling localised fires in the machinery space. Gurkha security guards man the gangway 24 hours a day with metal detectors and other screening devices.
