Ten-month-old Anjara&#8217;s surgery marks a significant landmark for the organization which is operating two hospital ships at once in Africa for the first time.<\/p>\r\n\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6yxgAvenWJA?si=1UWAIHod_7MZGeNy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n\t<p>Anjara, who has become extremely attached to Lalaina, her mother, was born with bilateral cleft lip. Since then, her mother, having already heard about Mercy Ships in 2015 had been praying for the ships&#8217; return to Madagascar.<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;I thank God that Mercy Ships is here, so they can help fix my baby&#8217;s cleft lip,&#8221; she said in gratitude.<\/p>\r\n<p>Though a daily wager, Lalaina believes her daughter&#8217;s surgery is topmost priority and is completely dedicated to helping her walk this new journey of hope and healing.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a really exciting day because it&#8217;s the culmination of many years of work in preparation to return to Madagascar for our fifth-year service here in this nation,&#8221; the\u00a0<em>Africa Mercy<\/em>&#8216;s managing director from the USA, Nathan Jansen, shared his excitement to welcome Anjara on board as first patient of the field service.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/MGD240527_ANJARA_MGD08054_BEFORE_ADMISSION_JC003_HI-1024x683-1.jpg\" alt=\"MGD240527_ANJARA_MGD08054_BEFORE_ADMISSION_JC003_HI-1024x683\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" title=\"MGD240527_ANJARA_MGD08054_BEFORE_ADMISSION_JC003_HI-1024x683\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\r\n<h2>\r\n\t\tCanadian Volunteers at Work for this Island Nation\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t<p>Darryl Anderson, executive director of Mercy Ships commented &#8220;I am extremely proud of the role that Canadian volunteers play as part of an international team from over 60 countries worldwide.&#8221; Anderson continued &#8220;The wide range of skills from our volunteers speaks to the generosity of spirit that characterizes Mercy Ships Canada volunteers.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Attwaters-PS1200.jpg\" alt=\"Attwaters PS1200\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"800\" width=\"1200\" title=\"Attwaters PS1200\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\r\n<figure><figcaption>The Attwaters (Canadian family from Regina, SK) in front of the Africa Mercy in Madagascar.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\t<p>Since arriving in the country in February, the\u00a0<em>Africa Mercy<\/em>\u00a0implemented an extensive strategy to ensure the broad reach of its services, covering diverse regions within Madagascar. With registrations spanning 12 regions across the country.<\/p>\r\n<p>Chris Attwater (top left), Canadian volunteer who serves as Transport and Maintenance Manager has been leading the team that set up the dock with tents and everything needed to begin the field service here in Toamasina, Madagascar:<\/p>\r\n\t<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s truly been a momentous time aboard the\u00a0<em>Africa Mercy<\/em>\u00a0as the first surgeries have begun. This achievement is a result of our team&#8217;s collective efforts and our partners&#8217; support. It&#8217;s been a humbling experience to witness the Lord&#8217;s work through the hands of the hospital, Hope Center, and hospital chaplaincy crew as they directly interact with the Malagasy patients and caregivers, making a real difference in their lives.<\/p>\r\n<p>A significant amount has been done in preparation for this field service. Many meetings occurred, and ideas were shared as the various stakeholders gathered to ensure we were ready for the first patients to arrive.<\/p>\r\n<p>My Transportation and Maintenance team members are phenomenal &#8211; they have gone above and beyond as they humbly serve. God has been good to us regarding our teams&#8217; staffing complement, and I could not be prouder to be part of this group of volunteer crew and Malagasy day crew members. The team is responsible for dock-side set-up and maintenance, vehicle allocation and repairs, and Hope Center maintenance. The guys assisted the Hospitatiner Corporation in setting up the new dockside HIB inflatable tents and metal shipping container workspaces. The tents house the pre-op, rehabilitation, eye clinic, and outpatient care teams. The containers accommodate the dental department, vehicle workshop, and departmental storage. After completing the major set-up components, we shifted focus to fine-tuning and maintenance. We&#8217;ve also made the dock space accessible for our crew&#8217;s fun and fitness by adding painted lines and nets for volleyball, pickleball, basketball, soccer, and an outdoor weightlifting gym.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Joshua-in-Madagascar-May-2024-PS1500.jpg\" alt=\"Joshua Chau, Photographer\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"1000\" width=\"1500\" title=\"Joshua-in-Madagascar-May-2024 PS1500\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\r\n<figure><figcaption>Joshua Chau in Liambolo during Anjara&#8217;s home visit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\t<p>Photographer Joshua Chau, a Canadian volunteer who documented Anjara&#8217;s journey commented:<\/p>\r\n\t<p>&#8220;As a person with limited medical background, being able to document Anjara&#8217;s journey through her surgery has been a phenomenal opportunity. It was incredibly moving to see a mother presented with a tangible, life-changing solution for her child and I am grateful to have played a small role in it&#8221;.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>Marie-Lou Filiatrault, from Montreal, is a clinical dietician volunteer. Her role is crucial in supporting and helping young patients like Anjara before and after surgery. She shared the experience of her first humanitarian mission with Mercy Ships in Madagascar:<\/p>\r\n\t<p>&#8220;It was a long way from Montreal to Toamasina, but well worth the effort. As soon as I arrived on the boat, I was warmly welcomed and diligently oriented to life on board the\u00a0<em>Africa Mercy<\/em>\u00a0and to my department, clinical nutrition.<\/p>\r\n<p>I have the opportunity to broaden my experience of health problems that are extremely rare in developed countries, such as goitre and limb reconstruction surgeries following extreme untreated burns.<\/p>\r\nEveryone greets and smiles at each other, it&#8217;s pleasant and comforting. The patients are so resilient, courageous and grateful for the care and service they receive on board.<br \/>\r\nIn just a few days, I feel more confident and already well integrated into this close-knit community. Come and try it out, you have everything to gain.&#8221;\r\n<h2>\r\n\t\tCleft Lip Surgery: A New Chapter for Anjara and Her Family\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t<p>Since Anjara&#8217;s birth, Lalaina has shouldered the guilt of desiring a second child and the blame for her daughter&#8217;s cleft lip. Though her family has continued to show her love and support, she is unable to fully come into the profound joyousness of motherhood. But at last, just two days after Mother&#8217;s Day celebration in Madagascar, Lalaina&#8217;s joy was restored.<\/p>\r\n<p>Lalaina was filled with profound gratitude and relief when she heard about her daughter&#8217;s surgery date.<\/p>\r\n<p>On Tuesday morning, May 28, Anjara went into surgery with Dr. Gary and the love of volunteer crew on board and all over the world. She also had her mother&#8217;s love and presence waiting for her outside of the operating room, and at home, her family waiting for her in prayer and hope.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>&#8220;I thank God for sending Mercy Ships to be used as an instrument to do her surgery so that she will be like other kids. L&#8217;op\u00e9ration de la fente labiale d&#8217;Anjara, \u00e2g\u00e9e de 10 mois, marque une \u00e9tape importante pour l&#8217;ONG\u00a0qui, pour la premi\u00e8re fois,\u00a0sert l&#8217;Afrique\u00a0avec\u00a0deux navires-h\u00f4pitaux en m\u00eame temps.<\/p>\r\n<h2>\r\n\t\tLe fardeau d&#8217;une m\u00e8re\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t<p>Dix ann\u00e9es, c&#8217;est le temps qu&#8217;il a fallu \u00e0 Lalaina pour devenir m\u00e8re. Cette naissance devait \u00eatre source de joie et d&#8217;\u00e9merveillement, mais ce n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas le cas. Depuis qu&#8217;Anjara est n\u00e9e, sa m\u00e8re porte la culpabilit\u00e9 et la responsabilit\u00e9 de la fente labiale de sa fille. Bien que sa famille ait continu\u00e9 \u00e0 lui t\u00e9moigner de l&#8217;amour et du soutien, elle n&#8217;est pas parvenue \u00e0 s&#8217;\u00e9panouir pleinement dans la joie profonde de la maternit\u00e9. Elle avait pourtant d\u00e9j\u00e0 entendu parler de Mercy Ships en 2015, et esp\u00e8rait que les navires reviennent \u00e0 Madagascar.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/MADA-CANADA-300x160-1.png\" alt=\"MADA-CANADA-300x160\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"160\" width=\"300\" title=\"MADA-CANADA-300x160\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\r\n\t<p>Alors qu&#8217;au Canada cette op\u00e9ration serait facilement accessible pour un b\u00e9b\u00e9 naissant avec cette condition, ce n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas le cas pour Anjara.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00c0 Madagascar, il n&#8217;y a que<strong>\u00a020 m\u00e9decins pour 100 000 personnes<\/strong>. \u00c0 titre de comparaison, le Canada compte 241 m\u00e9decins pour 100 000 habitants. Par le manque flagrant de m\u00e9decins, l&#8217;espoir de Lalaina pour gu\u00e9rir sa fille s&#8217;\u00e9loignait.<\/p>\r\n\t<p>Le photographe Joshua Chau, un b\u00e9n\u00e9vole canadien qui a document\u00e9 le voyage d&#8217;Anjara, a comment\u00e9 :<\/p>\r\n\t<p>\u00ab En tant que personne ayant une formation non-m\u00e9dicale, pouvoir documenter le parcours d&#8217;Anjara \u00e0 travers son op\u00e9ration a \u00e9t\u00e9 une belle opportunit\u00e9. Les inscriptions couvrent 12 r\u00e9gions du pays. Dieu a \u00e9t\u00e9 bon envers nos \u00e9quipes, et je ne pourrais pas \u00eatre plus fier de faire partie de ce groupe de b\u00e9n\u00e9voles et de membres de l&#8217;\u00e9quipe malgache. L&#8217;\u00e9quipe est responsable de l&#8217;installation et de l&#8217;entretien des quais, de l&#8217;attribution et de la r\u00e9paration des v\u00e9hicules, ainsi que de l&#8217;entretien du centre Hope. Les membres de l&#8217;\u00e9quipe ont aid\u00e9 \u00e0 installer les nouvelles tentes gonflables sur les quais et les espaces de travail am\u00e9nag\u00e9s dans les conteneurs d&#8217;exp\u00e9dition m\u00e9talliques. Les tentes abritent les \u00e9quipes du service pr\u00e9op\u00e9ratoire, de r\u00e9\u00e9ducation, de clinique ophtalmologique et de soins ambulatoires. Les conteneurs sont pour le service dentaire, l&#8217;atelier automobile et les entrep\u00f4ts. Apr\u00e8s avoir termin\u00e9 les principaux \u00e9l\u00e9ments de l&#8217;installation, nous nous sommes concentr\u00e9s sur la finition et l&#8217;entretien. Les patients sont tellement r\u00e9silients, courageux et reconnaissants des soins et services re\u00e7us \u00e0 bord. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 remplie d&#8217;une profonde gratitude et d&#8217;un grand soulagement lorsqu&#8217;elle a appris la date de l&#8217;op\u00e9ration de sa fille.
