The re-fit project work includes new radiology equipment. The\u00a0<em>Global Mercy<\/em> new radiology equipment was installed before the orthopaedic phase in December 2023 of the Sierra Leone field service.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\t\tDigital X-Ray Detectors\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/MGE251104_DIGITAL_XRAY_DETECTOR_HR002_HI-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Digital X-ray detector.\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"1707\" width=\"2560\" title=\"Digital X-ray detector.\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n\t<p>Radiology equipment has a typical lifecycle of 7-10 years.\u00a0 Radiology services are required 24\/7 to provide diagnostic imaging for patients and crew on a routine and emergency basis and essential to providing safe surgery.<\/p>\n<p>The current radiology system requires two images be taken and later stitched together in the software. The child is required to maintain in an awkward position for an extended period allowing for the child to move about and the two images then are different and cannot be properly aligned in the software.\u00a0 Currently, the surgeons are not getting the images they need, and the child is subject to double exposure of X-ray radiation.\u00a0 Also, this manual stitching of long leg images does not work in our population of children with severe deformities.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\t\tTransport Stretchers\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/patient-elisabeth-gallery-1.jpg\" alt=\"Digital X-Ray Detectors &amp; Transport Stretchers Project\u200b\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"780\" width=\"1135\" title=\"patient-elisabeth-gallery-1\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n\t<p>The transport stretchers for the\u00a0<em>Africa Mercy<\/em>, have a usage cycle of 5-10 years to ensure safety and available maintenance parts.<\/p>\n<p>The current transport stretchers on the\u00a0<em>Africa Mercy<\/em>\u00a0are now more than 8 years old and are approaching the end of their expected usage cycle.\u00a0 These must be replaced due to their age and reliability. The manufacturer no longer produces replacement repair parts needed for safety and maintenance.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\t\tProject Impacts\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>The radiology equipment arrived at the warehouse, it was then shipped to the <em>Africa Mercy<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em>Global Mercy<\/em> where it has been installed and commissioned for use. The digital X-ray detectors radiology equipment have been installed on both the <em>Global Mercy<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em>Africa Mercy<\/em> to simplify vendor support, biomedical maintenance tasks and ensure uniform machine functioning for radiology technicians and were procured from an established Mercy Ships&#8217;
