According to the\u00a0Lancet Global Surgery 2030 Report<\/a>, over 16 million people die each year due to lack of surgical care; Mercy Ships is building a response to this world problem for the future. The organization aims to increase its work with partner nations in Africa to help meet this challenge.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\t\tThe Global Mercy<\/em> Hospital Ship\r\n\t<\/h3>\r\n\t

The\u00a0Global Mercy\u2122<\/em> is delivering a safe and clean environment to various African nations, providing help and resources from some of the most well-trained physicians in the world. Over the vessel’s 50 year expected\u00a0lifespan<\/strong>, it is estimated that more than\u00a0150,000 lives will be changed on board<\/strong>\u00a0through surgery alone.<\/p>\r\nThe\u00a0174-meter, 37,856-ton<\/strong> ship has six operating rooms and house over 600 volunteers<\/strong> from around the globe representing many disciplines including surgeons, maritime crew, cooks, teachers, electricians, the host staff and more. Each year, more than 1,500 volunteer professionals<\/strong> from over 60 countries<\/strong> serve on board.
\r\nThe ship also features a 682-seat auditorium, student academy, gymnasium, pool, caf\u00e9, shop and library – all of which have been designed to accommodate up to 950 crew on board when docked in port.\r\n

\r\n\t\tGlobal Mercy<\/em>‘s Field Services\r\n\t<\/h3>\r\n\t

In addition to providing surgeries, the\u00a0Global Mercy\u2122<\/em> is outfitted with state-of-the-art training spaces<\/strong>\u00a0including a\u00a0simulation lab<\/strong>\u00a0with virtual and augmented reality, mannequins and other training tools and simulated post-op care space, which allow trainers to simulate local conditions and limitations in order to teach best practices in low-resource environments.<\/p>\r\n

    Why use hospital ships?<\/h5>\r\n\t\t\t

    According to the\u00a0Lancet Global Surgery 2030 Report, an estimated number of\u00a016.9 million people die yearly<\/strong>\u00a0due to lack of access to surgical care.\u00a0Over 93 percent of the population<\/strong>\u00a0of sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to safe and timely surgery.<\/p>\r\n

    Over 40% of the world’s population lives within 100 kms of a coast<\/strong>. Our hospital ships deliver a state-of-the-art hospital to port cities, providing a controlled, safe and clean environment for patients and volunteers.<\/p>\r\n

    How is the electricity handled on the hospital ship?<\/h5>\r\n\t\t\t

    Energy-efficient LEDs in light fixtures. Low sulfur marine fuels help reduce contaminants. Sailing at low speeds between ports to reduce carbon emissions. Complying to international (MARPOL 73-78) standards, with regulate what ships do with waste, oil, sewage, garbage and air pollution.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

    Are the pollutants coming from the Mercy Ships fleet contributing to global warming?<\/h5>\r\n\t\t\t

    Mercy Ships currently complies with many maritime industry standards that regulate what the ships do with waste, oil, sewage, garbage and air pollution – one of which is the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships Maritime Pollution (MARPOL 73-78) standards. Additionally, to lower its CO2 footprint, Mercy Ships utilizes marine fuels that meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) 0.5% Sulphur cap – which helps reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, the ships also sail at low speeds between ports.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

    What is a simulation lab?<\/h5>\r\n\t\t\t

    The simulation lab allows trainers to simulate local conditions & limitations in order to teach best practices in low-resource environments.<\/p>\r\n
