{"id":101,"date":"2024-07-20T18:44:11","date_gmt":"2024-07-21T01:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mercyships.onpressidium.com\/?page_id=101"},"modified":"2025-10-21T15:00:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T22:00:11","slug":"gift-acceptance-policy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/en\/gift-acceptance-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Gift Acceptance Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h1>\r\n\t\tGift Acceptance Policy\r\n\t<\/h1>\r\n<h2>\r\n\t\tPurpose\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t<p><em>To set standards of ethical conduct in managing our fundraising activities.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<h3>\r\n\t\tScope\r\n\t<\/h3>\r\n\t<p><em>Donors, employees, Board and external stakeholders.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<h3>\r\n\t\tPolicy Statement\r\n\t<\/h3>\r\n\t<p>Mercy Ships Canada intends to solicit gifts of cash and other property (&#8220;Gifts&#8221;), and may receive unsolicited Gifts from time to time.\u00a0 This policy is intended to describe the types of Gifts that Mercy Ships Canada will accept, who is able to accept Gifts on behalf of Mercy Ships Canada and the terms upon which each type of Gift will be accepted.<\/p>\r\n<h4>1. Acceptable Gifts<\/h4>\r\n<p>The following types of Gifts may be accepted:<\/p>\r\n<p>(a) cash;<\/p>\r\n<p>(b) publicly traded securities (in kind);<\/p>\r\n<p>(c) bequests;<\/p>\r\n<p>(d) life insurance policies;<\/p>\r\n<p>(e) charitable remainder trusts;<\/p>\r\n<p>(f) gift annuities (re-insured or otherwise);<\/p>\r\n<p>(g) gifts-in-kind;<\/p>\r\n<p>(h) real property;<\/p>\r\n<p>(i) privately held securities; and<\/p>\r\n<p>(j) interests in a partnership.<\/p>\r\n<p>the terms upon which each type of Gift will be accepted.<\/p>\r\n<h4>2. Responsibility<\/h4>\r\n<p>2.1\u00a0\u00a0The following types of Gifts may be accepted by the National Director of Mercy Ships Canada. The National Director may, in his or her discretion, delegate the acceptance of some or all of these types of Gifts:<\/p>\r\n<p>(a) cash;<\/p>\r\n<p>(b) publicly traded securities (in kind);<\/p>\r\n<p>(c) bequests;<\/p>\r\n<p>(d) life insurance policies;\u00a0 and<\/p>\r\n<p>(e) gift annuities (re-insured or otherwise).<\/p>\r\n<p>2.2\u00a0 \u00a0The following types of Gifts must be approved and accepted by the Board:<\/p>\r\n<p>(a) charitable remainder trusts;<\/p>\r\n<p>(b) gifts-in-kind;<\/p>\r\n<p>(c) real property;<\/p>\r\n<p>(d) privately held securities; and<\/p>\r\n<p>(e) interests in a partnership.<\/p>\r\n<h4>3. Specific Acceptance Procedures<\/h4>\r\n<p>3.1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Executive Director will develop procedures for the acceptance and processing of the types of Gifts described in 2.1.<\/p>\r\n<p>3.2\u00a0  The Board will develop procedures for the acceptance and processing of the types of Gifts described in 2.2, which procedures must include the following:<\/p>\r\n<p>(a) with respect to charitable remainder trusts, Mercy Ships Canada will not serve as the trustee of a charitable remainder trust and an opinion from an actuary must be obtained to determine the amount of the gift which may be receipted and legal counsel must be engaged;<\/p>\r\n<p>(b)\u00a0 with respect to gifts-in-kind, an appraisal from a qualified appraiser must be obtained and only those items which can immediately and easily be sold or items which can be used in the premises or administration of Mercy Ships Canada may be accepted;<\/p>\r\n<p>(c) with respect to a gift of real property or an interest in real property, a Phase 1 Environmental Assessment and an appraisal from a qualified appraiser must be obtained and legal counsel must be engaged;<\/p>\r\n<p>(d) with respect to a gift of privately held securities, legal counsel must be engaged;<\/p>\r\n<p>(e) with respect to a gift of an interest in a partnership, legal counsel must be engaged.<\/p>\r\n<p>(f) with respect to naming and endowment proposals, they will be reviewed by the Board.<\/p>\r\n<h2>\r\n\t\tOther Policies\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/complaints-policy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tComplaints Policy\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/ethical-fundraising-financial-accountability-policy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEthical Policy\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/donors-bill-of-rights-policy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDonors&#8217; Rights Policy\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/gift-acceptance-policy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGift Acceptance Policy\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/summary-of-privacy-policy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSummary of Privacy Policy\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/mercyships.ca\/privacy-policy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPrivacy Policy\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gift Acceptance Policy Purpose To set standards of ethical conduct in managing our fundraising activities.
